Delegation of Russian Orthodox Church visits Japan PDF Печать E-mail

From October 1 to 10, 2016, the representatives of Nicholo-Ugreshskaya Seminary visited the Land of the Rising Sun within the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church. The clergy and the laity of the Russian Orthodox Church were invited to Japan by the Japan’s Ambassador to Russia Toyohisa Kodzuki during his meeting with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia in August 2016.

 

The delegation was formed with the blessing of Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Head of the Department for External Church Relations. The trip was organized by the Japan Russia Youth Exchange Center.

On October 1 the Metropolitan of Tokyo and all Japan Daniel and clergymen of the delegation celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Tokyo, which is widely known as “Nicholas-do” (Nicholas Temple) – after St. Nicholas of Japan, who brought Orthodox faith to Japan. After the liturgy guests from Russia greeted Metropolitan Daniel on behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk. For a keepsake guests delivered to Metropolitan Daniel the Panagia, the icons of the Saints of the Russian Orthodox Church and some copies of the movie of Metropolitan Hilarion "Orthodoxy in Japan" in Japanese.

On the same day the Russian delegation venerated the relics of St. Nicholas of Japan, Equal-to-the-Apostles, which lies on Tokyo's Yanaka cemetery, and prayed for the repose of Metropolitan Sergiy (Tikhomirov), Metropolitan Theodosius (Nagasima) and Bishop Nicholas (Ono) who rest here.

Next days the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church also visited the Annunciation Temple in Kyoto and Resurrection Temple in Hakodate. On October 9 Hegumen Ioann (Rubin), assisted by the other clergymen of the delegation, celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Temple of Alexander Nevsky in Tokyo (the representation of the Russian Orthodox Church).

During the visit Russian delegation was welcomed by Deputy Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan M. Komura. This meeting was attended by Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Japan E.V. Afanasiev. Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church also met with the Deputies of the Japanese parliament M. Adati and M. Sibayama. During the meetings with Japanese politicians there were discussed the development of Russia-Japan humanitarian relations and the positive role of religious contacts in the increase of mutual understanding between our peoples.

During the stay in Japan Russian guests also visited Hakodate City Hall, Hakodate branch of the Far Eastern Federal University, the University Kokugakuin in Tokyo, Ryukoku University in Kyoto, a number of Buddhist monasteries and temple complexes, and other cultural and historical sights of the Land of the Rising Sun.

On the way from Moscow to Tokyo, the delegation made a stopover in Shanghai, where the Orthodox clergy were warmly welcomed by A.N. Evsikov, General Consul of the Russian Federation in this town. Russian Orthodox Church delegation visited Shanghai Cathedral of the "Surety of Sinners" Icon of the Theotokos and the St. Nicholas Church, where in recent years Shanghai Orthodox community led by the archpriest Alexiy Kiselevich has performed the Divine service.
