In XIX century canonizations were extremely rare in Russian Orthodox Church. One of the saints, canonized during this period, was St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, Bishop of Voronezh.

St.Tikhon (in the world Timothy) was born in 1724 in the province of Novgorod. Throughout his life he had been an example of Christian conduct and obedience. The saint lived in very simple circumstances: he slept on straw, covered by a sheepskin coat. His humility was so great that when the fool hit him on the cheek with the words "don't be so arrogant" then the Saint asked for forgiveness and paid him 3 pennies every day.

The Saint has always been forgiving to others. Once, during the Lent, he saw the monks eating fish which is forbidden in that time. The monks were scared, but St. Tikhon calmed them and ate some fish saying: "I know you. Love is above fasting".

In 1778 the Saint was honored with vision of the Most Holy Virgin Mary. The Saint predicted the future. So, he foresaw the victory over the French led by Napoleon in 1812. Three years before his death, he knew the day of his repose. After his death, the relics of the Saint have worked numerous miracles, thus he was soon, in 1861, canonized.
